In Poland, this salad needs no introduction. It is likely the country’s most cult dish. Starting from a very young age, every polish kid asks before dinner is served: “is it with mizeria?”. And then for a few second their hearts stop, full of hope that the answer will be YES!!!!!:)  This modest salad has a lot of charm – enough to conquer not only my heart or every Pole’s heart but even heart of the great chef Jamie Oliver, who wrote about this dish 🙂

To make mizeria you need only 10-15min, 3 ingredients and to be hungry 😉 This summery salad pairs easily with many dishes. At the heart of this minimalistic salad is the handsome and crunchy, mister cucumber 🙂 The origins of which, until this day, are a contentious issue. But let’s focus on this gorgeous product. Mr. Cucumber is one of the oldest vegetables or fruits (I call it that as in some cultures, it is treated as a fruit and served with desserts). It’s rich in antioxidants, which helps to protect against cancer. Also, cucumbers accelerate the intestinal tract, preventing constipation and are very rich in water. Of course, this is just a little nibble of the benefits of this tasty product.

The story of Mizeria comes from poor and honest kitchens, through its simplicity and affordability. But, as always, anything that comes wrapped up in a simple idea, is usually the best!:) It is no different here. Thanks to this simplicity, we can relish in the refreshing flavour, which is the best during summertime, when the days are long and hot, and we’re dreaming about jumping into cold water and treating ourselves to something light and fresh.

If you’re daydreaming about this amazing side, then stick with me and follow all of chezdomia steps 🙂

# What you need

  • 1 regular green cucumber or 2 small ones
  • ½ young onion or 1 small one
  • 3-4 tablespoons of greek yogurt (the original recipe is with sour cream, but I think this option is better and lighter for our bodies)
  • Fresh salt & pepper

*For decoration, you can use small bunch of finely chopped fresh dill

#Step 1

The most important step is to find a good cucumber. I recommend checking to see if both ends are hard — if so, that’s a good sign that the cucumber will be crunchy and fresh. If both or one of the ends is soft, the cucumber is no longer very fresh. The skin should also be slightly shiny.

Start by taking your perfect cucumber, peeling and finely slicing into round slices by knife or if you have with mandoline slicer – with a mandoline, our slices will be pure perfection 🙂 Next take the young onion, peel and cut into fine cubes.

#Step 2

Place the slices into a bowl, sprinkle with salt and a bit of pepper. Next, put 4TBSP of greek yogurt and stir gently until everything is evenly mixed. Then taste — if it’s a bit too bland, (it may be, as we are always very cautious with this ingredient :)) season once again. I recommend chilling the salad for about 10-15 min before serving; however when I’m in a hurry, I usually eat it straight out of the bowl. And, voila! Your cooling summer salads is ready!  I told you, it’s super easy and fast. Smacznego !:)

Mizeria can stay no longer than a 1 day in fridge, after that the cucumber juice make yogurt to diluted

Check both ends – if they are hard, that’s a good sign that the cucumber will be crunchy and fresh. If both or one of the ends is soft, the cucumber is no longer very fresh. The skin should also be slightly shiny

My favorite set with mizera during the summertime is with young potatoes and fried egg, soo yummy 🙂
